Prime Minister Welcomes Smooth Indonesian Election Process Approved for Release: 09 July 2014 The Prime Minister, Hon Peter O’Neill CMG MP, has expressed his confidence in the way in which Indonesia’s Presidential election is being conducted, and looks forward to maintaining close bilateral ties with the next administration. The Prime Minister said Indonesia is a close friend, as well as being a neighbor of Papua New Guinea, and the smooth way in which the Presidential election is taking place is reassuring. “The Government of Papua New Guinea extends its congratulations to the Republic of Indonesia for the successful manner in which parliamentary and presidential elections have taken place this year,” the Prime Minister said. “We look forward to working with the next elected Indonesian President and his government. “For the past ten years Papua New Guinea has strengthened relations with Indonesia and worked closely with President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono. “With ongoing bilateral engagement and cooperation including through APEC, Papua New Guinea and Indonesia have built business and economic links that are benefiting our people. “I am sure this cooperation will continue with the incoming Indonesian presidential administration.” Mr O’Neill also noted the logistics involved to elect a new President of Indonesia and said there are always lessons in successful election processes for the region. “In the months ahead I am sure many countries in the region will be interested to hear of the successes and challenges posed by such an extensive election logistical process,” the Prime Minister said. “I am sure electoral authorities around the region will benefit by learning from the Indonesian experience.” More than 185 million people are voting in the presidential election at one of 470,000 polling places. This includes around 6,000 inhabited islands across Indonesia and several remote locations.
