Prime Minister engages Hundreds at Town-Hall in London ST. GEORGE’S, GRENADA, October 27, 2014 – GIS: In what Prime Minister Dr. the Right Honourable Keith Mitchell has described as one of the most “engaging sessions he has had in the London diaspora community,” hundreds of Grenadians and friends of Grenada attended the “evening with the Prime Minister” event in London, on Friday, October 24. The Town hall-style meeting, organized by the Grenada High Commission in London, headed by High Commissioner Joslyn Whiteman, was attended by a large number of second generation Grenadians who offered their support for national development. The packed audience sought answers on issues such as unemployment, healthcare, preparations to safeguard against the Ebola virus, the lingering effects of the Chikungunya virus that has recently been plaguing the region, plans for the agriculture industry, and Government’s overall efforts to stabilize the slumping economy that it inherited upon assuming office in 2013. In highlighting the measures undertaken by Government to reverse the fiscal situation, Prime Minister Mitchell detailed the Debt Restructuring Programme facilitated by the IMF; the involvement of the private sector in fostering growth and Government’s commitment to work with all social partners. The Prime Minister underscored the strides taken to promote investment in the hotel sector, as well as the ongoing efforts to establish a Medical Park in Grenada by leveraging the relationship with St. George’s University, and hotel developers regionally and internationally. According to Prime Minister Mitchell, “the medical park will rival the best offered in modern services anywhere in the world, and will not only serve as a medical tourism facility, but it will help to boost faith in the country’s healthcare system, which has long been an issue of discomfort for Grenadian citizens in the diaspora who would like to return to Grenada upon retirement.” Over the years, the diaspora community in London, like in the United States and Canada, has contributed significantly to Grenada’s development, especially in the healthcare sector. Senator Simon Stiell who was in London on other business, also attended the Town-hall session, and addressed the audience on the Government’s continued efforts to revitalize the agriculture sector, and to commercialise government estates. The Town-hall meeting was part of a number of national engagements that Prime Minister will hold in London between October 24 and 29, on his way back from Rome, where he had taken his family to visit Pope Francis as a personal gift to his Mother, a devout Catholic, who turned 92 earlier in October. In among the more lighthearted moments of the Town-hall in London, Prime Minister was highly commended for being a “model son” and acceding to one of his mother’s greatest wishes. Dr. Mitchell was also complimented for his consistent calls to unify Grenadians, whether at home or abroad. In fact, one Grenadian brother in attendance, stated that although he had never been a supporter of Dr. Mitchell and his Political Party, he has been heartened at what has been happening vis à vis Grenada’s development prospects in the last year and a half, and he is therefore happy to answer the call for unification, and to be “counted in” for the advancement of Team Grenada.
