Principal’s Message Kia ora Koutou. Greetings. Some lovely spring weather has arrived to lift the spirits but we wont get carried away as there could still be some sting in the winter tail. Recently at a meeting with a group of parents I outlined some of the strengths of the College. New Zealand schools have long been tasked to look at constant improvement particularly with academic performance and ensuring every child has the chance for success. This is a positive culture that exists in our school. Our academic record speaks for itself. That is not to say we always succeed but as a Catholic school it is a moral imperative that we strive for. Any school can run the risk of placing too much emphasis on one particular area of school life. I often hear theres too much sport or too much RE or too much time out of class for any given reason. Its a tension we constantly hold. We can argue the relative merits of how important and how much time and energy should be devoted to any endeavour. The fact is its all important to a greater or lesser degree. We are a broad church and a broad community. No one thing should over ride all other things. Kavanaghs strength is in its diversity and students across the spectrum being able to access the things they need, enjoy or hold a special interest for them to move forward. Sometimes thats in the curriculum or sits beside it. We cant be top of the pops in everything but we can sure give it a good go. A couple of weeks ago there was a great group of Kavanagh students supporting the 1st XI soccer guys in their final down at the Oval. Although well down on the scoreboard our support-ers stayed right to the end and were well behaved and gracious in defeat. The students themselves organised that support and showed great school spirit. You cant buy or force that. When people say Whats so great about Kavanagh? I think of things like that. Tracy OBrien
