Printed in the current edition of our local newspaper The Republican News: _________________________________ Local business owner Linda Herdering donated a wall-full of her artwork to the HART Animal Center to decorate their conference room in the hopes of encouraging more donations. She and her husband, Mike, own and operate Husky Power Dogsledding near McHenry. In addition to dogsled tours, Linda offers artist services and artwork for sale (see their website for more information.) The blank walls at HART provided the perfect space for Linda to design and hang 35 portraits of her sled dogs. Many of the images are painted photos which have been digitally manipulated and printed on both watercolor paper and canvas paper, then painted, while some are photos only. For the last ten years Linda has participated in art shows and multi-county Arts Council displays, often showcasing a sleddog portrait or an image of a running dog team. Many pieces of her art have been purchased by both locals and visitors which always surprises her: “They probably have their own dogs—why would they hang MY dog’s face in their house!” She has won numerous awards for artwork—including a very ironic award for her portrait of sleddog “Oreo” who won “Best in Show” (also a dog show award) at The Gallery in Oakland. Her work has been printed in several national magazines along with being chosen as the cover for the Garrett County Arts Council publication “Ginseng.” Presently many of her photographs of sleddogs can be seen in the current issue of our own “Glades Star,” the quarterly publication of the Garrett County Historical Society. Before dogsledding and marriage to a U.S. Marine, Linda owned a photography business in Washington, DC. Today folks find her artwork page on the dogsledding website and then email favorite photos of their pets--which Linda then manipulates, prints and paints. The wall of sleddogs is easily seen by HART visitors through windows as they first enter the building. The HART Animal Center is a charitable animal welfare organization founded in 2003 to improve the condition of homeless animals in the western Maryland region. Both Husky Power Dogsledding and HART are located on Bumble Bee road, only a couple miles from McHenry.
