Prior to 2003 even before I gained admission to study History @ the Benue State University BSU Makurdi, the name Okpe O Okpe had already rang a bell in my head, though I had never meet him in person before then, the fact that he taught a good number of students among whom I had friends in History of Scientific Ideas a GST course which he handled with so much intellect & prowess made him very famous & popular, then came the opportunity to meet him when I finally gained admission, as a newly admitted Jambite,(100level student) usually nervous, my first encounter with him was not so pleasant, I came to view him as a controversial scholar, owing to his too serious outlooks, but with time, I came to understand whom the man PROF OkPEH OCHAYI OkPEH truly Was & still is, an international scholar par excellence, A reputable Historian of world class standard, mentor to aspiring young scholars, a serious minded person, a God fearing man, yesterday the Academic staff union(ASUU) of BSU held a valedictory congress in his honor, @ the college of Health science where an award of Excellent was presented to him for his service to ASUU BSU which was highly recognized & appreciated. Reputable scholar, prof Omotoye Olorode from Olabisi Onabanjo university Ogun state & renounced Activist Comrade Ezenwa Nwagwu, did justice to the papers they presented, prompting a standing ovation, the goodwill massages/testimonies that followed from prof Ogah Ajene whom represented the VC, to prof Adejo, Dr Igabna Ajir, were just great & overwhelming after a fulfilled session, we all moved to BSU senior staff club 4 enough enjoyment as there was so much to eat, drink & dance, I call on all members in the house to join me as we continue to celebrate this rear GEM in our Midst prof Okpeh O Okpeh Jnr. Fly even higher prof, as u have written your name in gold already in the flied of scholarship. U are indeed a mentor to we most as even the silent ones whom may detest your principles attest to this
