Privatization of electricity? Pattan observes shutdown => Hundreds of people came on roads in Pattan town on Monday after the word spread that Power Development Department is mulling to privatize electricity in the town. People assembled in market and amid protests urged shopkeepers to observe complete shutdown. Within a few minutes, whole town wore a deserted look while the people continued to raise anti-PDD slogans. According to reports, scores of people at Pattan town caste suspension after finding underground electrical cables lying alongside the road. Soon the word spread that PDD is mulling to privatize electricity in the town. People alleged that PDD has given the contract to WIPRO and has chosen Pattan town for the experiment. Police and civil administration officials visited the spot and assured the protestors that they will take up the issue with District Development Commissioner Baramulla. The officials told people they even don’t have any idea in this regard and requested them to carry on with their normal business. The protestors dispersed peacefully while all the shops and business establishments got open during afternoon. Chief Engineer PDD, Muzaffar Ahmed Matoo told CNS that people have some misconception as the department has no idea to privatize electricity. (CNS)
