Priyamboda Bolchhi (PRIYAMBODA’S VOICE) Story synopsis Swagoto Chatterjee, a researcher who has always been working hard typing computer buttons, focusing on the screen every moment, writing notes restlessly and reading books and newspaper articles. The researcher is a teacher by profession and thus he has interaction with several teachers in different parts of the globe among whom there is Rose Sabanal a Japanese teacher who is very enthusiast to learn about Bengali literature and culture. They both at a point decide to work together to exchange the knowledge of each other’s culture and then the researcher starts exploring the studies on Japan-Bengal relations. All the time he has been engrossed in exploring new knowledge and information, and thus he has been discovering new insight in the Japan-Bengal relations of century back. When the first relation between Japan and Bangladesh has established? Who is that Bengali has gone to Japan first? Who is that Japanese has come to the Indian Subcontinent, especially Bangladesh first? Researcher is so busy with his thesis. He has to discover the early kinship between these two nations. His Assistant Onirban Islam is also in the middle sea, both are tired enough to find the head of the chain after studying the data already they have. At last they decide to go out from their study room. While Sormista Chatterjee, sister of the researcher who was away home and when she came in, she miraculously been involved in research as a third member of the team. Till date the researcher have learnt that Rabindranath Tagore visited Japan in 1916 which was a milestone in the relations of the two Asian nations, and they have added that before Tagore there was Hariprova Takeda who visited Japan in 1912 and published a book on her tour in 1915. They wanted to establish that it was the first Bengali book on Japan but the protagonist of the film discovers much novel ideas. During his brooding, suddenly one night, Priyamboda Devi, the nineteenth century enlightened lady who was associated with the then Bengali writers and writing communities and also the niece of Promoth Chowdhury appears. Researcher becomes surprised. He cannot make himself clear, how a twentieth century learned widow lady has come to his house and why she has come! Priyomboda Devi then started to tell him the story of early period. She was widowed at a very early stage and devoted all her time in working on literary activities. It is also heard that after the death of Tagore’s wife, a proposal was raised about the possibility of the marriage of Rabindranath and Priyamboda, though it didn’t succeed at the end. Afterwards, when Okakura Tensin, the Japanese philosopher came to India, Priyamboda happened to meet him which developed into a love-relationship. Gradually it happens that every night Priyamboda comes and talks to him (the researcher). The arrival of her becomes a pleasantry for the researcher. He waits for her, and they develop a liking for each other too. But above everything the new discoveries stand up. In the dream of the researcher, Priyamboda begins to provide her knowledge about how the people of the two countries began to be close to each other, how they reacted to other’s cultures etc, and thus we find that a picture of the interactions of the two nationalities gets illuminated which inspires the researcher to dig out more and more, and he pays visit to places like Santiniketan, and some places of Japan to substantiate his exploration. Most importantly in Kobe where Okakura Tensin used to live and with the researcher’s persistency in okakura’s house Priyamboda finally feels the completion of once cherished love. The story of the film enriches the way as the historical background is the spine of the story and fiction is flesh and blood.
