Problem: People in the arts are either underpaid or asked to give their services for free. Solution: We start with the kids. For the longest time, kids have been asked to participate in school programs to sing, dance, etc. Kids with talents in the visual arts are asked to decorate classrooms, bulletin boards, etc. Some are asked to play musical instruments while others march under the heat of the Sun. All of this, in exchange for a few measly points added to their grades. These schools, however, would shell out even just a bit of money to have professionals come to school and perform onstage. And thats exactly it: just a bit of money. And all of it, in the name of using ones talents for the greater good or in aid of education. See where Im going here? As early as when were young, our minds are conditioned to give our talents away, making us feel guilty about charging fees later on in life. It also develops within us the attitude of asking others to give us their talents for free or for a measly sum. I say we educate our kids, nieces, nephews, grandchildren, etc and let them know that their talents should not be taken for granted. That, if asked to use their talents, they should charge appropriately. After all, they use up priceless time and spend hard-earned money on materials. They do their best with whatever task they are given. Once this mindset is instilled in them, they will grow up knowing the value of their talents. Consequently, they will grow up with a deep appreciation of other peoples talents. Perhaps, it is easier thought of or said than done. But, perhaps, if we try, we can change the way things are. And, maybe, one day, there will no longer be such a thing as a starving artist.
