Profile of Mr. N.K. Illangakoon The 33rd Inspector General of Police of The Democratic, Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka N.K. Illangakoon - Inspector General of Police Mr. N.K. Illangakoon is a native of Pinnawala, Balangoda in Rathnapura District. He was born on 12th April 1956. He has studied at Udagama Maha Vidyalaya in Balangoda upto G.C.E. Advanced Level. He has excelled in athletics and has represented his school in all island athletic competitions. He has also been a member of several school societies. He entered University of Colombo in 1974. In 1979 he was conferred a Bachelor of Education Degree. He has also won University Colours for athletics. In the year 1982 Mr. Illangakoon joined the Police Department as a Probationary Assistant Superintendent of Police. After training, his first appointment was as Assistant Superintendent of Police, In-charge of Kurunegala District. He was one of the pioneers of the Police Special Task Force established in 1983 and he has served in Jaffna, Ampara and Batticaloa as an Area Commander and as the Coordinating Officer of Monaragala District. Also he was the first Deputy Commandant of the Special Task Force. He was promoted to the rank of Senior Superintendent of Police in 1994. Thereupon after functioning as the Officer In-charge of Anuradhapura and Gampaha Divisions respectively, Mr. N. K. Illangakoon was appointed as the Director Special Branch in 1999 and was promoted to the rank of Deputy Inspector General of Police. He has served as Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of the Western Province (North), Ministerial Security Division, Presidential Security Division and Crime Range and was promoted to the rank of Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police in 2006. Since then he has held high positions such as Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of the Western Province, Support Services, Crimes Range and Narcotic Bureau Range, Discipline and Conduct, Transport and Communication, Welfare, Special Investigation Unit and Police Legal Range and Administration. During his unblemished 29 years of service he has followed numerous training courses in Sri Lanka as well as in Singapore, Italy, Nepal, United States of America, India and Korea. Furthermore, he has conferred the Post-Graduate Diploma in Criminal Justice and Police Management from the University of Leicester, United Kingdom. Mr. N. K. Illangakoon, has rendered an excellent service to the motherland by fulfilling his responsibilities concerning the security arrangements for the international events such as, South Asian Games held in 2006, Conference of Ministers of Youth Affairs in Non-aligned Nations in 2007, 15th SAARC Conference of Heads of State in 2008, International Indian Film Awards Festival in 2010 and the ICC World Cup 2011 which were held in Sri Lanka. During his term of office he has immensely contributed for the development of athletics in the Police Department as the Chairman of the Police Athletic Association. He has also acted as the Vice-President of the Police Buddhist and Religious Affairs Association since 2007.
