Program aims to educate residents on new law BY GINNY SIMPSON | TELEGRAM STAFF Posted on August 14, 2013 BELTON — Bell County has launched a program to educate residents about the state’s voter identification law. The Texas Legislature passed Senate Bill 14 in 2011, creating a new requirement for voters to show identification at polling locations. The law had been placed on hold until the U.S. Supreme Court earlier this summer struck down part of the 1965 Voter Rights Act, which allowed Texas to enact its requirement that voters show photo identification before being handed a ballot. The law went into effect immediately. The Bell County Clerk’s office has started an outreach program to educate as many Bell County voters as possible before the next election, Bell County Clerk Shelley Coston said. “Our goal is to inform and prepare the general public of the voting process changes that are mandated by the new voter ID requirements,” she said. The hope of the county clerk’s office, which presides over elections, is to enable voters to get the necessary documentation and identification before early voting and Election Day. “It is our goal to provide a smooth transition to the new requirements with little inconvenience to our voters,” Coston said. Fliers are being distributed to churches, organizations, Chambers of Commerce, libraries and throughout the community. Identification is needed for almost all aspects of life, said Rich Cortese, Precinct 1 county commissioner, adding that he believes the requirement is fair. The seven acceptable forms of identification are: Texas driver’s license issued by the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS). Texas election identification certificate issued by DPS. Texas personal identification card issued by DPS. Texas concealed handgun license issued by DPS. U.S. military identification card containing the person’s photograph. U.S. citizenship certificate containing the person’s photograph. U.S. passport. gsimpson@tdtnews
