Promote imagination and creative play just for the glory of God! CLOSELY CONNECTED TO WORLD BUILDING is play: the suspension of everyday activities for the sheer fun of invention and for release, without any consideration for the results. Story may have a “purpose,” but it may not. For example, teens often ask me, “What’s the point of Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings? Is he making a political protest, a religious statement, a moral argument?” No, as Tolkien was quick to insist, there is no point – or at least, he didn’t set out to argue or promote anything. What launched his story was a sheer delight he took in inventing languages, from which he then invented cultures and people and history to go with it all.
