Prompted by a comment on another post. What are your views on understudies? I actually embrace the fact that there can be an understudy/alternate on for a role when I go to a show. All performers have been swing/ensemble/understudies at some point and I absolutely hate it when I hear people say things like oh god its an understudy on tonight. In the past Ive actively gone to see an understudy and with one particular Les Miserables cast I would pop up to London the moment some understudies tweeted they were on. I often find the comments about having to see an understudy come from 2 places: 1. Members of the public who are expecting a name (imagine the tearing of hair and wailing if Ronan Keating isnt on in Once/ Benedict Cumberbatch ill during Hamlet) or 2. Major theatre goers who know who the main lead is, but they may not be known to the general public ie JOJ or Killian for example and getting miffed that they are on holiday or poorly. I sometimes think it would be great to put on a whole understudy show so these guys can be seen in the role and get an audience in at possibly a cheaper price. Ive had understudies offer me free tickets to see them in rehearsals before and I think thats lovely
