Prompted by the series of accidents occurring recently near the St. Johns East Ward School, one of which nearly cost the life of 5-year old Willis Hettler Jr., city officials this week inaugurated a new street safety campaign and set up special traffic signs on East State Street, near the school. This street carries all US-27 and M-21 traffic and is especially hazardous. Shown above is one of the new signs, around which are grouped members of the school’s safety patrol with Reed Hall, city traffic officer. Left to right the boys are: Donald Salters, Robert Woodruff, Max Leonard, Dean Steves (the short one), Lee Rice, Charles Bishop, and Bruce McDiarmid. Speeders will find fast driving expensive on East State Street in the future. An additional safety patrol photo is shown but the kids are not identified.
