Property feud ends in brutal murders September 3, 2013 Brother kills sister and her mother-in-law in Santa Cruz TEAM HERALD bureau@herald-goa OLD GOA: A family dispute over property matters came to a gruesome end when a youth allegedly stabbed his sister and her mother-in-law to death, besides seriously wounding his brother-in-law at their residence in Santa Cruz on Monday night. The youth is also reported to have inflicted wounds on himself, before fleeing from the site and later reported at the Casualty of the GMC. Old Goa police has also detained one accomplice in this connection. Narrating the sequence of events to Herald, Mathias Vaz said the incident took place, when Norman Fernandes of Bambolim – who is the brother of Mathias’ daughter-in-law, Noreen Fernandes e Vaz (28) – along with two accomplices came to his house at about 8 pm. “Norman’s mother had passed away one-and-half months ago and there was some property dispute regarding issues of succession between Norman and his sister Noreen,” said Mathias. “I had three guests from Kolhapur at the time and my wife, Aurita (65), and our servant were in the kitchen preparing food for our guests.” “Suddenly, Norman entered my verandah and showed me an A4 size printed paper, which he said, was being distributed in Bambolim. He claimed that the contents were defamatory to him and wanted to know if I was aware of the contents. My son, Edgar, then came out into the verandah and told Norman that they would settle the issue on Tuesday,” Mathias added. Mathias felt that Norman may have been upset with Edgar, after suspecting him of instigating Noreen regarding the property matter. “Norman got provoked on Edgar’s suggestion and rushed inside, took out a knife and stabbed Edgar on his back, besides stabbing Noreen on the neck and Aurita multiple times,” he said. According to Mathias, the weapon used in the murders was brought by Norman and it did not belong to the Vaz family. “Norman then ran outside the verandah and with the same knife, he slit his own hands and fled. I am given to understand that he later reported at the GMC hospital,” Mathias said. Mathias then alerted the 108 ambulance and the injured were rushed to the GMC hospital, where Aurita and Noreen died of injuries, while Edgar and Norman were undergoing treatment in the hospital. On receiving news of the incident, an Old Goa police team rushed to the site and were in the process of conducting the panchanama in the house at St Cruz, when reports last came in. A number of senior police officials, including DySP Mahesh Gaonkar, Panjim PI Rajendra Prabhudessai, Agassaim PI Shivram Vaingankar and Old Goa PI Krishna Sinari, along with police teams also rushed to the GMC to take stock of the situation. The Old Goa police are investigating the case.
