Proposed State Budget Cut of $25.5 Million in Local Aid (WGGB) - TopicsExpress

Proposed State Budget Cut of $25.5 Million in Local Aid (WGGB) — A state budget backlash that could cut funding to local cities and towns including ones here in Western, Mass. We spoke with local leaders about what’s at stake, and what the impact would be of Governor Patrick’s proposed state wide local aid cut by $25.5 million. This is all part of Governor Patrick’s plan to close the budget gap as Massachusetts faces a 325$ million shortfall in its 2015 fiscal year budget. Local communities say local aide is not the area to be cutting. “Why is it they always want to cut local aide first. We have to lay off police, teachers and close the parks. If you re-evaluate it there are cuts that can be made and should be made to make government run a little more efficiently but you don’t have to have the boogey man in the closet saying oh we need 9-c cuts,” Tim Rooke, Springfield City Councilor told ABC40. Agawam strongly opposes the idea too. City Councilor George Bitzas made a resolution strongly opposing any cuts to local aide. Another Agawam City Councilor Paul Cavallo says they can always handle what comes there way. “We’ve had this problem before it’s just a matter of the mayor. If need be he’ll call his department heads together how is this going to affect us as a town operation and a school. I’m pretty confident about local aide because I did some reading and speaker DeLeo’s position and once the legislature does meet in January he’s going to move on restoring on the 28 million dollars,” Cavallo said. In a statement Thursday house speaker Robert DeLeo said, “I will not support a reduction of unrestricted local aid. Local aid is integral to helping municipalities accurately assess and plan their budgets.” With speaker DeLeo’s opposition in the cuts, he could block the proposal, but communities will still be hit with the $40.3 million reduction because Governor Patrick can implement those cuts unilaterally without legislative approval.
