Protect Your Pet with Cold Weather Tips: *STAY INSIDE - Cats and dogs should be kept inside when weather is below freezing. Like people, they are susceptible to frostbite and hypothermia *FEED WELL- keep your pet at a healthy weight through...out the winter. Watch their body condition as outdoor pets will require more calories in the winter to generate body heat and energy. * ROUTINELY CHECK WATER BOWLS- make sure that water is not frozen. Use plastic bowls for food and water when temperature is low. Your pets tongue can stick and freeze to metal. *PROVIDE SHELTER- We do not recommend keeping pets outdoors for long periods of time, but if you are unable to keep your pet inside during cold weather, provide them with a warm, solid shelter off the ground and bedding that is thick, dry and changed regularly. The door to the shelter should be positioned away from prevailing winds. Space heaters, heated pet mats and heat lamps should be avoided because of the risk of burns or fire. *MAKE SOME NOISE- warm engines attract cats and small wildlife, but it can be deadly. Check underneath your car, bang on the hood and honk the horn before starting the car to encourage any hitchhikers to abandon their roost. *PREVENT POISONING - Remember antifreeze is a deadly poison. Wipe up any spills and store antifreeze and other chemicals out of reach. Wipe your pets feet, legs and belly as they may pick up deicers, antifreeze or other toxins during walks. *RECOGNIZE PROBLEMS - If your pet is whinning, shivering, seems anxious, slows down or stops moving, seems weak, or seeks out warm places, bring them inside immediately. Certain medical conditions can worsen in the cooler weather (ex. arthritis). If you have any concerns, contact your veterinarian immediately. *STAY PREPARED - Cold weather brings the risk of severe winter weather, blizzards and power outages. Prepare a disaster/emergency kit that includes your pets needs as well. Have enough food, water and medication (including any prescription medication) on hand to get through at least 7 days.See More
