Protest in Hajin:‘Police officer allowed ‘renegade’ to thrash youth in front of him’ Bandipora, May 31, CNS: Scores of People’s Democratic Party workers staged a protest in Hajin area of Bandipora District against the alleged torture of a youth at the hands of a ‘renegade’ in police station Hajin. Soon after the protest, police released the youth and he was taken to hospital for treatment. Protestors said that a youth from Naid Mohalla Hajin namely Muhammad Azhar-u-Din Dar son of Muhammad Akbar Dar was bailed out by court after he was arrested by police on charges of stone-pelting. “Azhar was called to police station again by Station House Officer Hajin on Friday where a government gunman and infamous ‘renegade’ known as Tariq Mir aka Prina Nabid of Asham Safapora tortured him in presence of SHO. It is irony that a police officer is using renegades to harass and torture innocent youth. We have right to know what a renegade is doing in a police station and why SHO allowed him to thrash Azhar mercilessly,” PDP leader Yasir Reshi who was leading the protest told CNS. The protestors alleged that the youth was targeted on the instructions of a National Conference leader, as he is a relative of a PDP leader. The protestors further said that it was not only Azhar who was tortured in police station but another youth namely Showkat Ahmed Khan son of Muhammad Yousuf resident of Line Mohalla Shahgund was also beaten up by the said renegade in front of police officer. Yasir Reshi alleged that the said youth was targeted for casting his vote in favour of PDP. “This renegade belongs to National Conference and we condemn the police action for allowing any renegade to interrogate any youth,” he said. When CNS contacted SHO Hajin, he hung up the phone. All efforts to reach out other police officials did not materialize. However, a top police official said that it is political rivalry and nothing else. “Such incident may have occurred and I will look into it to ascertain the facts,” he said. Meanwhile police sources said that an team has been constituted to probe into the allegations. (CNS)
