Proud of my dad David Askew for building a beautiful, ecological new grocery store for Askews Foods and winning an architecture award for it. Here is the press release: Recognizable by its sweeping wood roof and large glass windows, Askew’s Uptown grocery store is the recipient of a prestigious Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia Award in Architecture, marking it as one of the province’s top buildings for 2013. Just 12 other projects, mostly built in the lower mainland, received awards from the Honorable Judith Guichon, Lieutenant Governor of BC at a gala in Vancouver on Oct. 25th. Askew’s Uptown, designed by Allen + Maurer Architects of Penticton, won a Special Jury Award for providing an alternative design to a neglected building type. Instead of the typical big box, Askew’s uses sustainable building technology, which can create a 60 percent reduction in energy consumption. Its large glass facade takes advantage of natural daylight and vistas while creating an urban space in a growing region of Salmon Arm. “We are thrilled to be recognized for the work,” says Chris Allen of Allen + Maurer Architects. “This building was an effort to create true sustainability, not just ecologically but economically and culturally.” On Oct. 29th Askew’s won an Illumination Award of Merit from the Illumination Engineering Society of North America, given out in Huntington Beach, California. Askew’s new store also recently won the 2013 best supermarket over 25,000 ft2 in the BC Yukon Region, and a Thompson Okanagan Commercial Building Award in 2012.
