Proverbs 25:2 - It is the glory of God to conceal a thing: but the honor of kings is to search out a matter. "There is a way that seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death." [Proverbs 16:25] These two scriptures are especially pertinent to each of us as we are about to enter into a hotly contested election season. We will be flooded with many words and promises from all different sides. If we are not focused and grounded we may say or repeat what we have heard without ever checking it out for ourselves. Judaism & Christianity are intensely aware of the power of speech and of the harm that can be done through speech. Please note that the universe itself was created through speech. Of the 43 sins enumerated on Yom Kippur, 11 are sins committed through speech. The harm done by speech is even worse than the harm done by stealing or by cheating someone financially: money lost can be repaid, but the harm done by speech can never be repaired. A vivid illustration the danger of improper speech: A woman went about the community telling lies about another woman in the community. Later, she realized the wrong she had done, and began to feel remorse. She went to the member and begged her forgiveness, saying she would do anything she could to make amends. The one offended told the woman, "Take a feather pillow, cut it open, and scatter the feathers to the winds." The woman thought this was a strange request, but it was a simple enough task, and she did it gladly. When she returned and said that she had done it, the offended one said, "Now, go and gather the feathers. Because you can no more make amends for the damage your words have done than you can recollect the feathers." I believe that most of us are a part of the Republican Women Federated not because we are women who want to be told what to believe and think but, because we are intelligent women seeking the truth. We want to hear it from the horse’s mouth. Let us make a commitment to ourselves to always check it out before we pass it on. Make it a personal goal not to believe what anyone else says about another person. Check it out. People’s feelings color facts. If you have witnessed it or heard it – still check it out.
