Proverbs 6:30 Men do not despise a thief if he steals To satisfy - TopicsExpress

Proverbs 6:30 Men do not despise a thief if he steals To satisfy [u]himself when he is hungry; 31 But when he is found, he must repay sevenfold; He must give all the [v]substance of his house. Something to consider... very timely for me. Yesterday in discussion with a group it came up that it was or was not sin to steal if you were hungry. I referenced Les Miserables, the movie, play and book by Victor Hugo that begins with Jean ValJean the protagonist leaving prison after serving a long sentence for stealing food to feed a starving woman and her family, his sister. The question was is it right to steal food if one is starving? According to this, while right, the originally short punishment ValJean was sentenced (five years) was also right, although his treatment during and after imprisonment is questioned. Ironic that this verse was part of my reading this morning.
