Provincialism: scene at the Phoenix airport this morning. New Zealand citizen of Chinese ancestry and limited English goes to the check-in counter to fly to Costa Rica. "Where is your return ticket from Costa Rica?" check-in person demands. NZ citizen replies: "I am not returning. From Costa Rica, I go to Cuba. From Cuba I go to Buenos Aires. From Buenos Aires I go by bus to Chile. From Chile I go to Easter Island. From Easter Island I go to Tahiti. From Tahiti I go to Pitcairn Island by boat. From Pitcairn Island I go by ship to New Zealand." ......... Silence at first from the check-in person. Then check-in person says, "You are going to have to explain to me where all those places are." NZ person pulls small atlas out of her purse. Check in person looks confused. "Now," check-in person says, thumbing the atlas......"Where is Phoenix, Arizona?"
