Psalm 34:8 “Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in him.” The Lord began our day with a HUGE blessing. Did I mention how difficult it was to chase after Claire with an IV pole? Well the Lord showed mercy on our frantic efforts to keep up with our daughter when the doctors decided to allow her time off of fluids after her chemo and rescue meds. Praise the Lord. This allowed her time from this morning till her chemo began to run free with no restrictions. This was not only a blessing for Claire but for us, starting our day with lifted spirits. Her chemo was scheduled to start at 2-2:30 today, but the pharmacy was late in making it and sending it to her floor. We did not begin until 4:30. We began by hooking up her IV line with a filter. Then in a flash Claire grabs the line and yanks it disconnecting it, but at first we didn’t know from where. Did it break in the IV line? Did it break where the IV meets the central line in her chest? Did it break the central line? Is the central line still in her chest? Then Jordan sees blood, and we got a little nervous naturally. Within a few second we discovered the line disconnected at a junction in the IV line, not at the central line (good news). The blood we saw was in the IV line and contained, it was not from an injury just negative pressure in the line (good news). After quickly changing the tubing and caps chemo was able to proceed, crisis avoided. Claire has earned her self the nickname “muscles” from her nurse today. Her first chemo went fine, then during her second chemo there was another line break. The IV line just came unscrewed from her cap due to Claire’s extreme activity. Again tubing was switched and chemo resumed, but we lost about half of the treatment in the tubing. Therefore, Claire is receiving another half dose as she sleeps tonight to make up for the lost amount. We are unable to measure the amount lost accurately, so we are just praying that the Lord has lead her medical team to the right answer with enough of the drug to maintain remission, but not too much to cause a higher risk of side effects. My detail oriented personality has a hard time with approximations, but my husband keeps me grounded in the fact God is in control. Ps 46:10 ““Let go of your concerns! Then you will know that I am God. I rule the nations. I rule the earth.” There is more good news today. Claire has eaten! How wonderful it continues to be to see her eat and drink. It eases the burden in my heart for her to enjoy those basic pleasures while she endures this treatment. My daughter has ran up and down the halls of Duke so much that my feet are sore. I do not know if hers were sore, but they were sweaty. A day of running while wearing socks in crocks is a recipe for “stinky feet”. My favorite part at the end of our day is giving Claire her sponge bath paying special attention to her feet. It is a way I can show my love and desire to meet her needs without words. It is a special time when I can dedicate my attention to her, serving her in a way she cannot do herself. It reminds me of the way Christ humbled himself when “he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him” John 13:4-5. Upon questioning Jesus said, “I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. Very truly I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.” Age, knowledge, wealth, or status do not make a person great. Being willing to serve and put others first makes you great in God’s eyes. Serving Claire is a natural instinct as a mother. Putting her needs ahead of my own is second nature. I pray that Claire’s daily reminder will help me show that serving love towards others.
