[Psalm 84:11] For the LORD God is a sun and shield: the LORD will give grace and glory: no good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly. As the Church of God, we are to be entirely focused on Him. He is our all, and every good thing we have was given by Him. Certainly the Church has a beauty, and is given understanding. However, much as the moon lights up the night sky with a light that is not its own, so is our beauty and understanding not of us; it originates with God. The psalmist wrote that our “LORD God is a sun”. God shines light upon His Church. Light allows us to see. Without the sun, we would have no vision, and would be in darkness. So it is with God and the Church. We would have no knowledge of Him or understanding of His word, except He by His grace shines the “light” upon us. He is the “light-giver”, and because of His light we can see spiritual things. He gives the Church its beauty, its glory. As the moon reflects the sun, the Church is to reflect the glory and beauty of the LORD. We are to shine in this dark world with the light He has put in us, until the “night” is ended and the “bright morning of Glory” dawns. He is also a “shield” for His Church. Christ said “the gates of hell shall not prevail against it”. He will have a witness to His sovereign grace, worshipping in Spirit and in Truth, until Christ returns and delivers the kingdom up to eternal glory. He has not promised that it will be found where I am. But I pray all my life I will be found where it is.
