Psychology Moment: A therapists education and training will determine how he or she understands people as well as what approach to counseling will be implemented in therapy. Here are a list of different counseling interventions: psychoanalytic, psycho-dynamic, cognitive behavioral, humanistic/existential ect....... Some of these interventions work much better with certain psychological disorders than others do. It is important that the client understands the therapists counseling methodology and that the therapist understands what the clients needs are and why he or she is in therapy. My own approach to therapy is cognitive behavioral ! I work with the way a client thinks and behaves. I believe that most psychopathology is the result of cognitive distortions and irrational views that clients hold concerning how they view themselves, others, and life as a whole. I believe that good mental health begins in the head ! Some clients need psychoanalytical or psycho-dynamic therapy because of the nature of the problem. Some therapists will spend a great deal of time exploring the clients past and childhood development. Cognitive behavioral therapists like myself, will only spend minimal time in the clients past. The emphasis in cognitive behavioral therapy is more centered on changing thinking and behavior related to the present.
