Puawui kicks off 2013 with a "Welcome 2013! Featured Written by Dr Sama Banya Print Email Dr Sama Banya Dr Sama Banya Let me open this first Puawui column of the New Year by extending to my ever cooperative editors and loyal readers and to every Sierra Leonean of whatever region and tribe, of whatever political leaning or conviction EVERY GOOD WISH for 2013. It has to be admitted that 2012 ended barely with a thud rather than a bang. The hopes and expectations of a very large majority of Sierra Leoneans remained unfulfilled despite the over exploited propaganda blitz of the ruling elite. Most people’s hopes and expectation of an “Agenda for Change” may be compared to those of a very hungry man who dreams of the most delicious bowl of rice in front of him even as his gut is twisting with hunger pain and his mouth continues to water in vain. In politics our hopes were thwarted by the conspiracy and intrigue perpetrated by corrupt politicians who were aided and abated by an even more corrupt electoral commission. As we seek justice in 2013 we shall wait patiently to see if the judiciary will confound its critics and come out fair and clean. In short we in the Sierra Leone Peoples Party SLPP maintain that the comments of international observers notwithstanding, we have been robbed of victory not for the first time, and in broad daylight. We have lived up to our reputation as purveyors and ambassadors of peace and unity in this country and have taken our case to the courts. The judiciary and especially certain figures in it have in the past been the objects of sharp criticisms much of which it must be admitted, was fair and justified. Many of our members remain doubtful that we would ever get justice at the hands of the current set of decision makers in that institution. On the other hand there are those of us who believe that our cause should be pursued so that whatever the outcome, posterity would judge the perpetrators of any injustice. In the meantime our people remain resolute and determined in their support of our Presidential candidate Retired Brigadier Julius Maada Bio and his equally popular running mate Dr. Kadi Sesay. I was in Kailahun during their recent “Thank you” visits to Kenema and Bo. I have been told that in both cities the turnout and enthusiasm of supporters was far in excess of the ones at the height of the last campaign. It took some effort to dampen the excitement and over enthusiasm of a supporter who constantly repeated to me that we already had our own President and Vice President. I finally brought the poor fellow back to earth by reminding him that for the moment those vacancies were already filled, thanks to the intrigues and conspiracy of a heartless woman. So it is then that ALL MUST WAIT CALMLY WITH PATIENCE and continue to heed the wise admonition of our leadership until we get to the final destination in our pursuit of justice and fair play for future generations. Who would have believed that after the visit of the SLPP Presidential candidate to the neighboring Republic of Guinea at the invitation of that country’s President his Excellency Alfa Conde’ and after the press release of the SLPP, that the awareness times newspaper would have come out with the ridiculous propaganda headline that “SLPP go pote to President Conde’” or that “Bio complain to Guinea President etc?” But that is the kind of character that is supposed to help Ernest to heal the wounds and trauma of 2012. God help mama Salone and poor David Jabati. I tell you dear readers that we are in for a great deal of painful irony in our new “Agenda for Prosperity” which will see right before our eyes, the more affluent having more and the wretched poor getting poorer. And it will happen right before our eyes as our bought over journalists and praise singers keep shouting “hallelujah!” Last modified on Thursday, 03 January 2013 08:29 Published in Puawui
