Public Announcement A National Teleconference on ‘A Citizen’s Movement for Democratic Republic of The Gambia’ Saturday, July 20, 2013 5:00pm – 7:00pm EST Conference Call # and Code: (605) 475-5900 & 416 565 6# This is a call to all concerned citizens of The Republic of Gambia and as well friends of the Gambia to participate in discussions on how rationale and concepts to organize a citizen’s bottom-up demand for Democracy in The Gambia The political mess and impasse of The Gambia is nothing new. There’re 2 broad camps of Gambians: i. Those believing we’re already a ‘Democracy’ with an elected President ii. Those believing Gambia is a Dictatorship. Within this group are some who think dictatorship starts with Yahya and other who maintained that democracy never really arrive at our shores Hereunder is a diagrammatic presentation SORRY GRAPHICS NOT PASTING - CHECK ONLINE PAPERS Those view that our country is a dictatorship fall in different schools of thought on the solutions First School of Thought: These are those who advocate uniting the opposition parties under a single leader to contest elections. This is not directly addressing the problem but they’ re hoping that should their candidate wins s/he will introduce democracy. Good luck because history is not their side. This group currently constitutes most of the political activism. Second School of Thought: Those who believe in the use of force to over throw Yahya. Again they’re counting on hope that whoever emerges as the leader on the ruins of Yahya would introduce democracy. More disturbing about this approach is the cost both in terms of human life/suffering and property. In addition they’re naïve in believing that Senegal and/or European Union will send in mercenaries/Soldiers to do the dirty work for them. Another military coup will only produce another dictator. Their own plan is not known but for obvious reasons that will be secret until implemented. Third School of Thought: These groups believe in the ‘Organized Power of The People’. Organizing citizens to start demanding from authorities to begin democratic reforms along with appropriate and adequate civic education. This is A Citizen’s Movement, its bottom-up and dictated by the power of people. It’s the ultimate supreme authority and power in a republic. The demands for reform has no bearing on who is in power and/or who are in opposition, it’s going to be the same for perpetuity. Even after appreciable attainment of democracy we can/will continue to be cornerstone watchful eye of citizen. This school of thought did not mean a stop to party politic and elections but we will not take sides nor do we see it necessary to call for union of parties. That choice is decision for the individual parties. The role of political parties in A Citizen’s Movement is very important and at times of need they will be called upon to join and as well help organize the people in making demands and use their followers to make such demands known to authorities. We will level the playing field; we’re ‘neutral brokers’ and will leave the choice of leaders to free Gambians. Fourth School of Thought: Those who argue about everything but hasn’t really thought out any solution. It’s a group of many characteristics, but tend to go with the flow of the noisiest. In fact noise suit their own personality Fellow Gambians, HOPE is not a PLAN. That is what the Party Unity and Use of Force camps are counting on. Be reminded after failing to demand appropriate reforms/changes from the Jawara Administration we put our hope on ‘Soldiers with a Difference’. How did that work out? History is one big classroom full of lessons – if you don’t learn and/or choose to ignore you’re doom. The purpose of this teleconference is to present the rationale/concepts of this approach to interested/none-interested Gambians while given opportunity to contribute and/or question. We hope to present a different perspective. Our hope is people begin to dissect The Problem(s) from The Effects of The Problem(s). That would just be the first step. We would consider it beyond expectation if we could find interested Gambians who would like to assume the task of ‘Defining The Problem’ and Analyzing The Operating Environment that will inform Goal(s) Setting and Program(s) Development. We hope this process to culminate in the production a document spelling out our ‘Vision’ of A Democratic Republic of The Gambia – call it ‘The Working Paper’ and/or whatever nationally agreed upon. Henceforth that will be our Holy Book of organizing Gambians for this long struggle. God Bless The Gambia!
