(Pete Bannan/Main Line Suburban Life) View and purchase photos One of the things that author Rachel Simmons discusses when she talks to students about bullying is a misconception about what a bully looks like. While speaking to a group of students in Wayne last week she said she often asks students to draw a picture of a bully. Normally, she’ll see drawings of what she described as a “big scary dude.” And that, she says, just isn’t right. On Friday, she brought her message on what she calls the hidden culture of relational aggression to students at Radnor Middle School. This aspect of bullying is when people, including young children, attempt to use their relationship with another person against them. That can include someone saying, “I’m not going to be your friend unless …” In talking to students, Simmons relates stories about her own experiences and shows examples from her life that illustrated this relational aggression. This included not only a case where it was done to her but another case years later when she did it to her best friend. In her first story, she discussed what it was like when she was a child and her best friend, Abby, used their relationship against her. According to Simmons, Abby, not her real name, began to control the relationship. “She wanted to take my friends away from me,” Simmons said. “At school she would tell kids not to sit with me at lunch.” Simmons went on to say that Abby would tell other kids lies about her.
