Published on 8 Jul 2014 Punjab which was known as the sword arm of India has a serious crisis on its hands - of not having enough recruits for the countrys armed forces. There was a time after Partition when nearly one fourth of the Indian Army was made up of people from Punjab. Slowly the numbers started dwindling mainly because of the policy of proportional representation - of the numbers of recruits from states directly proportional to their overall population numbers in the country. Then even the number of officers in the Army from Punjab dwindled. This was primarily because of other avenues opening up and the educated youth making a beeline for foreign countries. Now there is a shortfall in the even the number of recruits who fit the criteria wanting to join the Army. Surely the drug menace, poor fitness levels and poor education are responsible for the state of affairs. It is time the State Government wakes up and takes remedial steps. Organisations like the SGPC too need to take steps to educate and train its youth in its educational institutes. Punjab Government has done well to start the Maharaja Ranjit Singh Academy in Mohali, which has resulted in an increased officers intake from Punjab into the NDA. Some private efforts are also to be lauded. Baba Sewa Singh in Khadoor Sahib near Amritsar is also training a lot of men and women from the border districts for the security forces. More such efforts are required. Today the Army is facing a shortfall, and if this situation continues tomorrow even the police in Punjab may be called upon to get its constabulary from the neighbouring states. https://youtube/watch?v=JfC8GpJuE-Y
