Pumpkins Progress Report- September 4th 2014 Raspberry, strawberry, lemon and lime What do I care? Blueberry, apple, cherry, pumpkin and plum Call me for dinner, honey, Ill be there So sang Bob Dylan on his song Country Pie, from the Nashville Skyline album, many moons ago. Well, Ive tried all the pies in the song, except for pumpkin pie. I have never eaten a pumpkin pie, but thats all gonna change when I harvest my pumpkins and bake my very first pumpkin pie. Im gonna make some pumpkin soup too. Yum, yum! The pies, puddings and cakes that my mother used to bake, were always the best. My mother always used to bake a very good fruitcake. I used to like my fruitcake well cooked and crispy on the top. When I was a school boy, I used to come home from school and tap my mothers freshly baked fruitcake with a spoon, to make sure that it was crispy and baked enough. I cannot abide soggy fruitcake. Well, some people may consider me a fruitcake for writing a Pumpkins Progress Report every day. But what does it matter, and what do I care? Not a jot. They say the first sign of insanity is talking to yourself. Well, Ive been doing that for years. Writing this Pumpkins Progress Report is like talking to yourself really. Well, hardly anybody reads it for a start, and secondly- its good therapy to write down things that are on your mind. The reason I talk to myself is because Im the only one whose answers I accept, wrote George Carlin. Phillip K. Dick wrote, It is sometimes an appropriate response to reality to go insane. The statistics on sanity are that one in every four people is suffering from a mental illness. Look at your three best friends. If theyre okay, then its you, wrote Rita Mae Brown. One of my favorite quotes, which I often think of is- Insanity is doing the same thing, over and over again, and expecting a different result. A bit like going to work everyday, I guess. Tim Burton, the offbeat and zany film director said, One persons craziness is another persons reality. In individuals, insanity is rare, but in groups, parties, nations and epochs, it is the rule, wrote Fredrick Nietzsche. My favorite quote about insanity is this one by Edgar Allan Poe, I do not suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it. Well, Im enjoying every minute of growing my pumpkins, and Ive enjoyed every minute spent writing my Pumpkins Progress Reports. Some people just write things on Facebook like- Im bored, Ive got a headache, my toenails dont fit, I hate my curly teeth and straight hair, I hate my job, Im so depressed, I cant sleep, Whats the point, Im broke, my bums too big, does anybody know where I can by a big sackful of rocking horse manure? On and on it all goes. A meaningless stream of mundane platitudes and cliches, day after day, week after week and year after year. My point is this- I may be a twit, but Im a happy twit. Well, I have now left Reason and Sanity junction. Next stop, Looneyville, and then Pumpkin Heaven. Well, thats all for today from Pumpkins Progress Report (the gardening feature that just keeps on drifting along like a Montana log in the Mississippi river). Have a happy Thursday, but keep an eye out for the men in white coats.
