Punch Impersonation: FRSC asks SSS to probe 600 motorists SEPTEMBER 11, 2013 BY ADELANI ADEPEGBA, ABUJA The Federal Road Safety Corps has referred 600 individuals who applied for the new driver’s licence to the State Security Service to be investigated for impersonation and multiple applications. Many of the applicants were said to have applied for the licence in two or more states under different names and aliases, but the digital biometric system being used by the corps detected the anomalies. A number of the applicants had applied simultaneously for the security document in Abuja, Kogi, Lagos and Ondo states using fake names and identities, it was gathered. Our correspondent, who was given a guided tour of FRSC facilities in Abuja on Monday, observed that a security personnel was among the suspects who applied for the licence in FCT Abuja and Kogi State. The Special Assistant to the FRSC Corps Marshal, Janet Adepegba, explained that the biometric system alerted officials to the multiple applications and impersonation and that the names and other bio-data of the concerned applicants had been forwarded to the SSS for appropriate action. “The biometric system is so efficient that it takes 45 seconds to send application information from any FRSC command to the system at the headquarters. We have installed 375 V-sat for our operation, and the system detected 600 multiple applications and impersonation by applicants for driver’s licence, the case had been referred to the SSS for investigation,” she said. Adepegba attributed the delay in driver’s licence issuance to the need for thorough background checks on all applicants to ensure that the vital security document was not issued to impersonators. She added that the FRSC call centre operates round the clock with 30 personnel taking emergency calls from the public in case of traffic accident, fire outbreak, flooding and any other disaster.
