Pure reasoning as a means at arriving at truth is like a spider - TopicsExpress

Pure reasoning as a means at arriving at truth is like a spider who spins a web out of himself. The web is orderly and elaborate but it is only a trap. Using passive accumulation of experiences as a traditional empirical method for truth is like an ant who busily runs around and collects and piles up heaps of raw materials. Truth is only arrived through the operation like that of a bee, who like the ant, collects raw materials from the external world, but unlike the industrious creature attacks and modifies the collected stuff in order to make it yield its hidden treasure. John Dewey.
