Purefoods legend Jerry Codiñera happy about franchise’s return to old name Purefoods legend and current Arellano University head coach Jerry Codiñera has plenty to smile about these days. Not only did he lead his Chiefs to the school’s first ever NCAA finals appearance, he’s also received news that his old PBA club is reverting back to its much beloved old name in time for his jersey retirement ceremony. “Buti binalik sa dating pangalan. So many people I encountered pagka may guestings ako, yung Purefoods, they look at that name sa PBA,” Codiñera told News5 after the team’s victory over the JRU Heavy Bombers on Thursday. The PBA great, dubbed the ‘Defense Minister’ during his playing days, gave a hearty smile in reaction to the news that the San Mig Coffee Mixers will be known as the Purefoods Star Hotshots in the upcoming 40th season of Asia’s first play-for-pay league. It comes at the perfect time for the AU coach, whose trademark jersey No. 44 is set to be officially retired by the franchise in a ceremony on November 9 at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum during Purefoods’ Manila Clasico matchup against Barangay Ginebra San Miguel. He feels blessed that the ceremony, where fellow legend Rey Evangelista will also be honored with a jersey retirement, will take place under the Purefoods name. “Siyempre happy (ako). Tagal ko rin naglaro sa Purefoods eh.” Codiñera spent several years alongside four-time PBA MVP and current team manager Alvin Patrimonio and had a terrific career, even setting the league record for most blocks in a single game.
