Purist is a 30 year old term used to slander Murray Rothbard as rejected Ed Clark in the 1980 presidential race. Ed was the pragmatic LP candidate backed by the Crane Political Machine. In that election we got Reagan in that race which disarmed limited government libertarians, setting the state for a massive growth in government. We also got a demoralized LP as a result of Clark/Cranes sell out. The public at large saw limited government and free markets as Reagan-Friedmanism. Of course a recession in the 90s was the result of 8 years of bad ideas in action. The free market got the blame and we ended up with Clinton in 1992. Enemies of freedom loved to call the failure of Reaganism the free market at work. The moral of this story is always stick with principle even if you are called names like purist. Otherwise bad ideas get pushed by liberty candidates, the bad ideas get put into action, our situation deteriorates, and worse ideas get put into action.
