Purpose and Instruction John 21:14-17 Before and after His resurrection, Jesus loved His disciples and manifested His love by providing for their needs and desiring their fellowship. Today, He is still the same Savior who provides for us and seeks our fellowship. Subsequent to His resurrection, He also demonstrated to His disciples that He was still the Living Word who communicates and gives purpose to His own (vv.15-17). Early in Jesus ministry, He told the twelve to go forth and proclaim the gospel of the kingdom (Matt.10:1-7). They had a job and a purpose. Later, He informed them that they would receive the Holy Spirit, who would guide them into a new role (16:7-16). In todays text, Jesus elaborates on this new role and gives His disciples (Peter in particular) a new purpose: to feed His sheep. Certainly by this point the disciples must have anticipated a new direction in ministry. Even today, we serve a living Savior who has given us explicit instructions concerning how to live our lives and conduct ministry. Regardless of our status in life, God has given us direction and purpose. Our responsibility is to fulfill Gods will in this present church age in which we live-by doing His work His way! Hebrews 13:8 describes Jesus as the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever. His nature and character cannot change. He manifested Himself to those He loved in order to reveal to them that He was alive, that He still worked miracles, that He would still provide for His own, that He still desired their fellowship, and that He still communicated instruction and purpose for their lives. We serve this same risen Christ today who reveals these same truths to us! Are we listening to Him and obeying Him?
