Put in a call to Income Tax today: Me: Hello, Id like to know why I STILL havent heard anything from you re my year end submission please? Tax Mong: Because we are way behind Me: So, can you give me an indication when my returns are likely to be processed, because as a direct result of your being behind, social security, who take their calculations from YOUR calculations, are now charging me another £350 a month, and have been since January this year? Could it be in a month? 3 months? By year end 2014? Tax Mong: No, sorry. No idea. Nothing to do with us, you will have to take this up with social security. Me: But I have, and they have told me on numerous times that in no uncertain terms this is as a direct result of your delays, and they cant change my position until you update them. Tax Mong: Sorry. Nothing I can do. Me: So how come the tax office can send me a letter if I am ONE day late submitting monies I owe you, threatening with court action if not paid in 7 days, yet it is justifiable that you: a) fine people for submitting late year end returns, and b) admit no liability whosoever to the fact that already this year I have paid over £1700 on excess SS due to your incompetencies? c) treat all small businesses I know in the same way Tax Mong: Sorry. Not my department. Nothing I can do. Me: Ok. What would you do if you were me then? Tax Mong: Urrrrrrrrrrrrr.....sorry. Nothing you can do. And this, Facebook friends, is a system we pay for, that is supposed to encourage small business and enterprise. I have already mentioned this to the Tax Inspector, Kevin Stewart and various other government employees I know. The response is always the same - Yeah, I know. Its shocking. Well look into it.... Guernsey, you are a shambles. #taxmongs
