Put not your faith in princes! The forthcoming return of London - TopicsExpress

Put not your faith in princes! The forthcoming return of London mayor Boris Johnson to Parliament has gotten certain people very excited. It should be kept in mind that Boris is very much a creature of the world of the City, ands the denizens of that world are still very much creatures of the European Union. Shackled to a corpse, is Britain? Well, theres a lot of money to be made as the executor of the corpses will. Declining, aging Europe? Well, an aging Europe will need to borrow a lot of money on the way down and whos just the world financial center to arrange the loan? On the other hand, as soon as their perception of self-interest changes, they will change and so will Boris. He senses this and puts out little feelers from time to time. What I do like about Boris is his love of the bold stroke, his willingness to go where no politician has gone before. Boris Island for an airport? It may be crazy, but its certainly bold. All of the great Unions of the Anglosphere were made when one or more parties to the negotiation went out on a limb and made an offer so staggeringly bold that it broke the logjam. Pay off the debt from the Darien disaster? Deal made! The American states give up all their two-century-old Western claims? The Federal government take on all the states war debts? Nobody had gone into Philadelphia expecting that. Deal made! A transcontinental railroad for Canada, when the much richer USA had only just managed the task? Deal done! In short, Boris may be the only leader around with the sheer guts to offer and made a Realm Union. So, for all his faults, and with caveats in spades, I keep my eye on him. conservativehome/platform/2014/08/jp-floru-boris-is-the-new-boris-he-will-be-one-of-our-truly-great-prime-ministers.html
