Putting aside all the mawkish commercialized patriotism of BostonStrong, I really am proud of the City of Boston and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts today. A woman from Kenya, and a man from Eritrea who became an American, won the race, and people from all over the world gathered in our pretty gray town in a spirit of fellowship and humanism; that is the best answer we can give to the hateful punks who lit off those bombs a year ago. But we should go further -- we should take that spirit of fellowship, and apply it to so much else that troubles Boston, and all New England -- the violence that stains Blue Hill Avenue and the streets of our neighborhoods, the scourge of opiate addiction that is wreaking havoc in places like Taunton and Plymouth, the children who go to bed hungry in the shadow of Beacon Hills vast wealth. Lets take our feeling of fellowship, and the sibling-spirit of this day, and make it an everyday thing. Only then will we truly be strong.
