Putting this out there in a main post: it seems clear now the reasons the owner of the Jesus wife fragment demanded secrecy. It was a con. Im worried it was a con deliberately targeting King and HTR. The letter mentioning the John fragment as part of the purchased collection (the letter with its suspicious references) seems now evidence that the owner is doing the conning, not that he was a victim of a fraudulent sale. Theres been some speculation in another friends thread that this is like the Sokal hoax. To me its looking more like that. With King and the HTR as targets. The forgery is elaborate (two manuscripts, well-faked ink), but not too elaborate (both papyri were copied from known editions of other mss with the same line breaks??). Its like the person behind the hoax is taunting us to see if we could figure it out. And this is all the more reason to be suspicious when secrecy and a lack of transparency are the price of entry.
