Q&A with ‘The Paw Man’ (730) – The Unwelcome Guest Marlena Kuhn I have a big problem and could use your help hon. I have a dog and a cat as you know. I adopted a cat 2 weeks ago as she was doing poorly at the shelter. My sweet loving dog Nash is attacking her for NO reason that I can see. He loves my other cat. It occurred to me last night, that when it happens (2 times now) its when the new cat is on my chair and Nash is on the floor. Could he see this as a new pack member in a higher position than him? Help! Im getting scratched to hell and back breaking up fights. Does the new kitty have to go? How do I teach Nash this is unacceptable behavior? Paw Man The bottom line is that there’s a new member in the household and Nash is behaving inappropriately toward it. Whether it be cat, dog or human is pretty much irrelevant. I would guess that the matter is well resolved by now due to the months that this question has been waiting in the queue. But if not…… then you need to set up circumstances where your dog is likely to trigger (offer the unwanted behavior) and then pair that unwanted behavior with an aversive. Just as parents tend to make excuses for the unwanted behavior of their children (it’s not his fault, it’s those other bad kids he hangs around with that are to blame) we tend to forget about individual responsibility and the presence of a new cat in the household should not be an acceptable excuse for Nash’s actions and that’s exactly how you should perceive it and address it.
