Q: “My boyfriend touched his nose a lot when he was talking about his night out with his mates; doesn’t that mean he’s lying?” A: If only it was that simple! When it comes to deception, there is no cue akin to Pinocchio’s nose (his nose grew larger each time he lied, but it was unaltered each time he spoke the truth, so his growing nose was a reliable cue to deceit) – so consequently, there is no singular behaviour you can consistently rely upon… however you can subtly probe for hotspots if you have your suspicions about the validity of his story. Look and listen for signs of increased cognitive load (deep thinking) as these will serve you better than looking for individual signs like nose touching. Research has indicated that the use of a slower speech rate, a decrease in illustrator hand gestures, non-immediate answers and a lack of plausibility are reliable signs of cognitive load, so long as they appear in a cluster and not singularly. Be advised however that the behavioural differences between a truth teller and a liar can be very faint, making the subject of lie catching complex and fraught with difficulties.
