Q. Social media platforms like Whatsapp, Twitter, facebook and others allow a person to post a profile picture with one’s portfolio and contact detail. People use this to post a photograph of themselves, spouse, child, some animate object or a picture of something relating to their personal life. Is this permissible? Please explain. A: Social media is a largely open forum for anyone to access and view. As such, by posting personal pictures on social media one allows unknown individuals to see what they normally do not have access to. This can lead to people becoming curious, envious or even jealous and thereby may open the door to abuse and vice. Therefore personal and animate postings should be avoided. If one really wishes to have a profile picture, one should place an inanimate image that conveys a positive message.
