Q: What is your training philosophy? A: At this point in my career I dont have really expensive horses, therefore and my Dad taught me the greatest lesson Id ever need to know. Its that price doesnt determine if a horse will be good or not. He told me Tara, you have to treat every horse the same! When they walk a horse in your barn, that horse doesnt know what they cost, they dont know how theyre bred, and the sure dont know if they have perfect conformation. All that horse will ever know is how you treated it! And my Dad is right, Ive seen a lesser horse win (lesser bred, lesser pedigree, lesser conformation), because no one ever told that horse he was lesser. When he walked in the paddock he was ready, and he wanted to win... So he DID! My is a fairy tale, Dad didnt come from a race horse family and he went on to win the All American Futurity, and he did it with a $1,200 horse. That right there is the kind of reality that makes us believe in our dreams! Another thing I am really big on is fitness, and running a horse when they are READY not just because there is a race for them! I think finding that balance of running them where they can win when they are ready is key. Of course we cant always find a perfect race when they are ready so you just make due.
