Q) What would I do to encourage the hiring of more African American teachers? This is a major challenge, especially because the teaching profession is currently dominated by suburban, white, women. When children do not see many people who look like them in a certain profession, they begin to think that this particular profession is not for them. I think that this is why we really need to step up our recruiting efforts when it comes to attracting black males to teaching careers. The district needs to provide major incentives to attract black males who are currently certified to teach, will soon be certified to teach, or who have a desire to go to college in the pursuit of a teaching career. I think the district should also make partnerships with some of our area colleges to provide full scholarships to our RCSD black male graduates who will pursue college degrees in the education field. When black men become more prevalent in our school buildings as teachers and educational leaders, more black boys will view this profession as more of a viable career choice for them.
