QFES are urging residents to prepare for heightened fire conditions over the next few days. Whilst Redland and the Greater Brisbane region is not included in the “particular attention” area, we remain at alert levels with conditions lending to increased possibility of bushfire. Residents urged to prepare for heightened fire conditions The Rural Fire Service Queensland (RFSQ) is urging residents in a number of locations across the State to be vigilant with heightened fire conditions predicted for today. RFSQ Assistant Commissioner Neil Gallant said precautions were being taken by firefighters to prepare for potential vegetation fires during the heightened fire conditions. “Very high fire danger has been forecast for much of the north and far-north, stretching south along the Queensland coast, particularly for inland areas in central and southern Queensland,” Mr Gallant said. “Warm temperatures combined with low humidity and strong winds make conditions perfect for fires to spark and spread quickly. “These conditions also make it difficult to contain vegetation fires, so we’re asking residents to take extra care and be alert.” Areas of particular concern include: the northern Peninsula, Gulf Country, Tablelands, Northern Goldfields and Upper Flinders, Herbert and Lower Burdekin, central coast and Whitsundays, Central Highlands and Coalfields, Capricornia, Wide Bay and Burnett, south-east coast, Darling Downs and Granite Belt and Maranoa and Warrego areas. Mr Gallant said landowners who had conducted hazard reduction burns recently should take immediate steps to ensure their fire had been properly extinguished. “Landowners who have conducted burns should make sure residual fires are contained so that they will not escape,” he said. Mr Gallant said with fire activity ramping up across the State, it was crucial for residents to make sure they were doing all they could to prepare their homes and properties. “If they haven’t already, residents should finalise preparations on their property and visit the Rural Fire Service Queensland website to download a bushfire survival plan so that no one is caught off guard,” he said. “We are also asking people to ensure they do not throw cigarette butts out of the car window and be careful when operating machinery in grassed areas.” Further information on bushfire preparation can be found at ruralfire.qld.gov.au.
