ANSWER from me: "As the others say, a challenging task and I have a lot of sore losers rattling around in my brain but here are 5: THE HISTORY OF CINEMAS IN FIVE FILMS Napoleon (Abel Gance, 1927) – perhaps the most ambitious and adventurous film of the silent era, a portrait of one of the most charismatic and complex leaders in human history Mr Smith Goes to Washington (Frank Capra, 1939) – a high point of the golden age of Hollywood, rejuvenating the American dream by criticising corruption and complacency Lawrence of Arabia (David Lean, 1962) – perhaps the greatest the international epic and a brave look at the construction of what we now understand to be the Middle East Cabaret (Bob Fosse, 1972) – arguably the perfect mix of drama and dance, and a portait of one of the most artistically dynamic and dangerous periods in human history Apocalypse Now (Francis Ford Coppola, 1979) – arguably the apex of auteur cinema, a portrait of madness on an imperial scale All of these films meld a richly insightful and often politically critical portrait of an era with superb psychological storytelling, stunning performances and cinematic brilliance.
