QUNOOT AN-NAWAZIL Every masjid around the world should be making Qunoot An-Nawazil during the Fard (obligatory) prayers. If your masjid isnt doing it, bring it to their attention. Qunoot An-Nawazil is a Sunnah of the Prophet (SAW) that was done any time the Muslims were facing a calamity, hardship, oppression, etc. Nawaazil is the plural of naazilah, something that falls, and in the Islamic definition it refers to any calamity that befalls the Ummah. 8 points regarding this duaa: 1. It was mentioned in multiple authentic narrations that it was performed by the Prophet (SAW) and the companions. In other words, its an established Sunnah. 2. Its to be done in the last rakah *after* rising from rukoo, of every fard prayer. Although the Prophet (SAW) did it during all 5 prayers, he did it more frequently during Fajr and Maghrib. 3. It is the Sunnah for the Imam to make the duaa out loud and for the followers to say Ameen out loud to each duaa. 4. The duaa does not have any specific order or format; it should mention the calamity or situation thats being prayed for. 5. It is Sunnah to raise ones hands during the duaa, but it is *not* Sunnah to wipe ones face afterwards because this was not mentioned in any authentic narration during Qunoot An-Nawazil. 6. The duaa should be discontinued after the calamity is lifted. 7. The duaa should be concise and fit the subject of the calamity. The Imam making duaa should know his community well in order to accommodate their needs in regards to the length of the duaa. 8. It was not authentically narrated that the duaa for nawazil was done if praying at home, or individually, or in a nafilah (voluntary prayer). What was mentioned was the 5 obligatory prayers in the community congregation. There is a difference of opinion but what seems safer is what has been clearly established (ie only during the jamaaah at the Masjid). This duaa should be done every time a calamity befalls the Muslim Ummah/Community. Sadly, this is a Sunnah that A LOT of Muslims are unaware of and it should be revived immediately, especially with the back-to-back calamities befalling our brothers and sisters. If you are an Imam, take it upon yourself to establish this Sunnah in your masjid in order to: A) Benefit the Muslims who are suffering through the duaa and B) Revive a Sunnah that many people are unaware of. Imagine for a moment, if every Masjid in the world was making duaa at the time of a calamity...
