#QZ8501 UPDATE: (10 JAN, 4:30 PM) DAY 14 - The tail of the AirAsia plane that crashed into the Java Sea has been lifted to the surface. - The black-box data recorders of AirAsia QZ8501 may have separated from the plane’s tail upon impact with water, said an Indonesian official. - Divers detected ‘pings’ about one kilometer away from where the tail was located. What we know so far: On 28 December, the plane, with 162 on board, was declared missing about an hour after the pilot requested for a change of altitude to avoid bad weather. The last comms between the plane and Indonesian air traffic control revealed that the latter issued approval for a reduced height of 34,000 feet, but they did not get a response from the pilot. It was later discovered that the plane had crashed into the Java Sea, near central Kalimantan. All of AirAsias Surabaya-Singapore flights have been suspended after it was revealed to be unauthorised; the airlines other flights are currently under probe. Indonesias transport ministry has also suspended four air traffic control officers linked to the flight and imposed mandatory pre-flight pilot briefings, after discovering that the pilots in the crashed plane did not receive a weather report prior to departure.
