Qantas has sacked 167 staff today as part of its plan to lay off around 5,000 workers, promoting fears of flight delays. The move will see 131 engineers lose their jobs, while 36 administration staff have also been axed. Steve Purvinas of the Licensed Aircraft Engineers Association Secretary says the loss of maintenance engineers will create safety problems and lead to flight delays because some aircraft will be left unairworthy.
