Ques: How did Sikhs take care of their hair during war? Ans: Well, that’s a very interesting question, which I think many people would like to know about. Many a time I have been asked why and how do Sikhs keep their hair intact? Don’t you find it difficult to wear turbans? Well, I must admit that wearing a turban needs some time (initially) and a strong determination as well. And that’s the reason as to why people are shirking from wearing turbans. But the crux behind the whole thing is that its not the kind of life one leads, it’s the courage you bring to it. You carry an identity, which differentiates you in a crowd. It maybe true that sometimes people look at you in an unpleasant way but it’s the courage you get by keeping that identity which prepares you for the challenges in life. And coming to the question of how Sikhs manage to keep hair at the times of war – Wearing a turban is just a matter of practice. I mean after some practice, it doesn’t really take time to wear a turban. It becomes an integral part of oneself. By covering hair, one is actually safe from the dust and dirt. And probably this is one of the reasons as to why commandos also cover their heads with a piece of cloth during military operations. I’d also like to add, that Sikhs have a history of fighting wars against oppression since the time of our Guru Sahib. And our Guru and our ancestor’s have actually preferred to sacrifice their lives for the people but never surrendered for cutting hair. So, that is the importance of hair to a Sikh. The turban doesnt represent anything except complete commitment.
