Quest For Knowledge Mini History Lesson For Today: On September 23, 1806, the Lewis and Clark Expedition returned after a more than two year long journey in which they explored the United States newly purchased western territory, collectively known as the Louisiana Purchase. The men, Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, had traveled with a group of 28 other men known as “The Corps of Discovery” up the Missouri River, through the Rocky Mountains, and reached the shore of the Pacific Ocean in present day Oregon. On September 23, the expedition finally returned to where it started, St. Louis, Missouri. Mobs of people turned out to welcome back the men, who up until that time were thought to be dead. Following their great welcome in St. Louis, Lewis and Clark proceeded to share the wealth of information they had uncovered during the expedition with President Thomas Jefferson.
